Teen Hygiene

Dear Cotillion Students,

I hope this email finds you well. With spring underway, spring sports and warmer weather, I thought it might be a good time to have a reminder about ‘Teen Hygiene’.

Ladies and gentlemen know how important it is to be well groomed – to be neat, clean and appropriate. It helps us to feel more confident and it makes life more pleasant for us and those around us. As you get older there is an increased need for hygiene, and part of growing up is learning to take care of yourself. Don’t let poor grooming keep others from learning just how wonderful you are!

How You Smell Matters! Be the best CLEANEST version of you!

1. Daily showers are important.

Use soap or body wash. The point is not to just get wet, the point is to get clean.

Depending on your activities, the weather and your own body – sometimes you might just need a second shower later on in the day.

2. Wash your hair regularly – with shampoo, not just rinse it with water.

Dirty hair can be very smelly!

3. Deodorant is your friend!

Use it EVERY DAY, in your armpits, it is not just for special occasions.

4. Brush and floss your teeth.

It helps to take care of your teeth, makes it nicer for you and for anyone that is close enough to talk to you. If you have braces or other orthodontic gear use extra effort to keep your teeth clean, it requires a little more work, but you will be glad that you put in the effort in the end.

5. Wear clean clothes.

Clothing that has been worn can trap odors – that you might just be ‘nose blind’ to. Just because you don’t see dirt or a spill on your clothing does not mean that it is clean. Before putting something you have worn away, check for smells, as well as spills.

(Once it is in the hamper, don’t pull it back out and wear it.)

6. Don’t over do it with perfumes, colognes, or body spray.

It is always better to use too little than too much.

Never use it to try to cover up smelling bad. Many times, I have had a student think that extra perfume or cologne would cover up the smell of sweat or body odor. It doesn’t cover it up, it makes it worse.

I have also had students that thought if a little perfume/cologne smells really good – MORE will smell even better. Again, it doesn’t work that way. (When in doubt – have mom sniff you out!)

7. Clean body, clean hair, clean face – don’t forget to groom your hands!

Keep your nails clean and trimmed. If the rest of you is clean and your nails are not, you give the impression of not being clean.

Get into the habit of being well groomed, it will allow you to always put your best foot forward.

Love,

Mrs. Achiu
