Dear Cotillion Students,
Last week we talked about the importance of respect for ourselves. This week, I want you to focus on respect for others. I want you to be aware that your posture, your eye contact, your words and your actions can all convey respect. The reason that we learn about and use good manners is to help us treat others with kindness and respect. When we are respectful of others we build better relationships.
Posture – When you stand up straight while you are talking to someone you are showing them respect without saying a word.
Eye Contact – Give the person that you are speaking to your full attention. If you are looking them in the eye, you are focused on them and it makes it easier to listen to what they are saying. Eye contact counts whenever they can see your face – facetime, video chats, zoom, etc. as well as in person.
Remember, that just as eye contact shows respect, giving someone an unkind look or rolling your eyes does just the opposite. Be careful!
Words – Are you remembering to use polite language? Are ‘please’, ‘thank you’, ‘may I’ and ‘excuse me’ included in your daily conversation with your family? Use compliments frequently – they let others know that you see and commend them for the good things they are doing, their accomplishments and talents. And don’t forget to express appreciation!
Think before you speak and be kind in the things that you say, words can be very hurtful, and once said can not be unsaid. Words can build others up or tear them down, the choice is yours. Choose well!
Actions are powerful in conveying how you feel.
Are you picking up after yourself? Do you offer to help without being asked? Are you careful to listen and not interrupt? Are you respectful of privacy? Are you respectful of those waiting to use something that you are using – the computer, tv, hot water, etc.? Are you using good table manners? Are you on time? Being on time shows respect for others and their time!
Make an extra effort this week to show respect to your family and anyone else that you communicate with.
I hope that you have a wonderful week filled with respect for those around you! Remember to be your best self – The world needs you!
Love,
Mrs. Achiu
